Lecture

Professor Dr. Michael von Brück
Chair of Religious Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich

India and Europe
India and Europe have been in contact since classical antiquity, but not until the 18th and 19th centuries did artistic, philosophical, and religious influences from India begin to have a profound effect on the cultural life of Europe. Indian influence had been felt in China and East Asia since the 1st century AD, notably through the spread of Buddhism, and this, in turn, was a source of inspiration to European artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. There is no such thing as a self-contained culture. The lecture will discuss the patterns, rejections, and creative potential of intercultural exchange.
