1912 to 1930 Israel Ber Neumann (1887–1961) was Max Beckmann’s dealer
and friend, called by the artist his “ur-manager.” After emigrating to
New York in 1923, he laid the foundations of Beckmann’s popularity in
the U.S.A. after World War II. He first sold prints and drawings by the
artist, then, deeply impressed by Self-Portrait with Red Scarf, (1917),
paintings as well. Edited by Ursula Harter and Stephan von Wiese,
the volume will contain both the complete correspondence between
Beckmann and Neumann and “Sorrow and Champagne,” the chapter devoted to
the artist in Neumann’s unpublished autobiography “Confessions of an
Art Dealer” (1959). The book will be published by Verlag Walther König,
Cologne.
