The first Max Beckmann Gesellschaft was founded in 1951. It was dissolved in 1984.
The Freundeskreis Max Beckmann Archiv e.V. was established in 1996 and renamed Max Beckmann Gesellschaft e.V. in 2005.

The purpose of the Gesellschaft is to support the Max Beckmann Archive as a public research resource by adding to its holdings of autographs, photographs, typescripts, and other archival material and by making funds available for research, publications, exhibitions, lectures etc. The ultimate goal of the Gesellschaft is to promote knowledge of Max Beckmann’s life and work.

Members receive an annual gift, pay reduced entrance fees to events organized by the Gesellschaft, and pay joint visits to major exhibitions.

All annual fees and donations will be acknowledged with an official receipt declaring the sum paid to be tax-deductible.
